AbstractVarious approaches to educational philosophy and developmental psychology are described. The purpose of the monograph was to review educational philosophy and developmental psychology in relation to educational methodology. The paper is presented in five sections. Section one, the introduction, explains the role of schools in transmitting social values and notes the importance of educational philosophy in this function. Section two defines ten schools of philosophical thought and briefly comments on methodological requirements for applying them to teaching/learning environments. The philosophies include pragmatism, experimentalism, instrumentalism, progressivism, essentialism, existentialism, and authoritarianism. Section three reviews theories of development that are important in helping educators to understand how children learn and, therefore, to choose appropriate methodologies. The author reviews developmental theories of Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, Robert Gagne, and Sidney Bijou and Donald Baer. Social development is also discussed in terms of moral development and values clarification. Sections four and five give a brief summary and a bibliography of 62 references. (AV)
